Positive Affirmations Can Help Boost Self Esteem

Have you ever been faced with your own view of yourself? You know, when you have a belief about yourself and someone forces you to see it differently? I had one yesterday. I was dress shopping with a friend and I didn’t like anything I tried one. My arms are too fat or my stomach is too flabby, etc. My friend would tell me that each dress looked great. Of course I wouldn’t believe her because she was just being nice. Or was she? Maybe she was being honest.

We are too hard on ourselves. We think negative thoughts and put ourselves down until it is ingrained in our patterns of thought and speech. In fact, we are often our own worst enemy. This is a growing problem in our society especially with women. We are faced with images of slender, beautiful and successful women every day. So it is easy to look in the mirror and put ourselves down.  And of course we all know what that does to self esteem. It sends it plunging to the basement!

We need to change the way we talk to ourselves so we can change our self perception. We are already using self talk by telling ourselves that we are too fat or too old or too whatever. So why not use this same pattern of self talk but change it up. Instead of telling ourselves the negative focus on the positive. Think about it, of all the people in the world only a tiny percentage end up on the cover of magazines. As a result the image we see isn’t a fair representation of how the average person looks. So why do we beat ourselves up because we don’t look like that? It is time to end the cycle!

So where do you begin? It is easy! Everyone has strong points, positive qualities and wonderful talents.  So focus on these things. Tell yourself you are a wonderful cook, a good friend, or a great gardener. The best way to go about this is to make a list of positive affirmations then post the list on your bathroom mirror. Read it out loud each morning as you get ready for the day. Perhaps put another list in your purse and read it on your lunch break. Read the list on your mirror again before you go to bed so the positive thoughts are in your mind.  

An amazing thing will happen as you start to read this list to yourself several times each day.  You will start to believe it! The positive statements will become a part of your life and your self esteem will soar out of the basement and into the penthouse.  You will find that you don’t have to have the perfect body or wonderful career to be successful in life. Just be yourself and be happy with who you are. Life would be pretty boring if we were all alike so celebrate difference!

Just like my friend proved to me, our perception can make us see something in ourselves that others don’t see. My friend helped me see that I was focusing on the wrong things. She looked at the person inside the dress, not the body. That is what we need to focus on, the inner beauty instead of the outer. Positive affirmations can help us do that.
